Pioneer Prophet in The New Republic

Writing for The New Republic, cultural historian Jackson Lears (one of my favorite authors during my graduate school years) tells the story of Mormon history, uses Max Weber (creatively) to interpret the changing position of the church within American society, and engages a large number of recent books on the Mormon past and present. Lears praises Pioneer Prophet as a “strong and authoritative biography.” Read the entire piece here.
